The use of innovative product Amorphous Metal Core in the distribution transformers will make these highly efficient by reducing " No Load Losses" tremendously which help Pakistan meeting the energy needs hence to overcome the present energy crises in the due course of time.

AMORPHOUS METAL CORE TRANSFORMERS BENEFITS

1. Amorphous metal core transformers improve electrical power distribution efficiency by reducing transformer core losses by about 70% compared to silicon steel-based transformers under sinusoidal load conditions.
2. Amorphous metal core transformers have superior electrical performance under harmonic conditions and may be possible to improve power quality and mitigate harmonics.
3. Amorphous metal core transformers have lower temperature rise, slower deterioration of insulation, may extend life and lower life cycle cost of the equipment.
4. Manufacturing of Amorphous metal is one step casting process compared to multiple steps involved in manufacturing CRGO material. Due to this characteristic high technology process, the energy consumption for manufacturing amorphous metal is about 25% compared to CRGO material. This makes amorphous material truly Eco-Friendly products it saves energy even during its manufacturing process.
Probably, first cost of amorphous transformers may be little higher (subject to efficiency parameters) in cases where high loss specifications are prevalent but in terms of life cycle cost of equipment (TOC) the same will be more competitive & better value for investment. As one move up the performance parameters, amorphous transformers may be cheaper even in the first cost and various global specifications are testimony to the same.
5. Since no load losses or core losses are 24 x 7; use of amorphous metal transformers can lead to huge saving in energy and therefore reduce greenhouse gases and other pollutants.
6. Excellent option to reduce system or distribution losses and improve efficiency.
7. Key to improving utility economics and enhancing energy conservation efforts worldwide.
8. Less expensive to operate
9. Replacing older inefficient transformers improves reliability.

Amorphous Metal Core
As a general example, an iron rod is wound with insulated copper wire (conductive wire), and when electric current is applied to the conductive wire, the process of electromagnetic induction magnetizes iron, which then behaves as a magnetic material. If the electric current is stopped the iron loses its magnetic force. In transformers, the core functions as this iron rod. To temporarily use a substance as a magnet is termed magnetization

TOC = Initial Purchase Price + Cost of Future Energy Losses This chart illustrates that despite a higher initial cost, the use of AMDTs results in overall financial savings for utilities over the life of the transformer, compared with the use of conventional silicon steel core transformers.

Amorphous Metal Distribution Transformers – GLOBAL SCENARIO

Several Electric utilities across the world have already adopted or in the process of migrating to high efficiency transformer standards to reduce distribution losses, improve their system efficiency and reduce green house gas emissions.

Several thousand AMDT units are serving successfully in the utilities of North America (USA, Canada and Mexico), Japan, China, India, South America (Brazil), Europe (Italy, Spain, UK, Germany, France, Belgium, Turkey and Hungary etc), Australia, Africa (Nigeria, Ghana etc), Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam, Nepal and Bangladesh. Many other countries like Russia, CIS countries; Middle East, Africa & Pakistan are in the process of developing the programmes to adopt amorphous technology to achieve energy savings.

Some of the well known transformer manufacturers (Global giants) producing AMDT are Hitachi, GE Prolec, Howard, ABB, Siemens, Pauwels Zhixin, San Jiang, Daihen Corporation, Tatung, Cheryong, Philec besides several manufacturers in India & China.

There are approximately 4 Million amorphous metal distribution transformers in service worldwide. AMDT typically has 7% to 10% of market share of distribution transformer market worldwide; however the same in India & China is about 15% & 20% respectively.
